Disinfection and Sterilization of Pipette

September 16,2022

The pipette (micro sampler) first appeared in 1956 and was invented by Schnitger, a scientist at the German Institute of Physiology and Chemistry. Later, in 1958, Eppendorf began to produce the button-type micro sampler, becoming the first company in the world to produce the micro sampler. The aspirating range of these micro samplers is 1-1000m1, which is suitable for clinical routine chemical laboratories.

Disinfection of pipette

  1. Chemical disinfection

To put it simply, wipe the external surface of the pipette with alcohol and dry it. This should be possible for all pipette brands. If there is a kind of pipette that cannot be disinfected by chemical disinfection, it can only prove that the material of its shell is very poor.

  1. Ultraviolet disinfection

It is to irradiate the surface of the pipettes with ultraviolet light and achieve the purpose of disinfection by destroying the DNA structure of the cell. The time of ultraviolet disinfection depends on the radiation intensity and the resistance of bacteria to ultraviolet radiation. Most brands can be disinfected with ultraviolet light, but it still needs to be confirmed with the supplier in advance. Not all pipettes can be disinfected with ultraviolet light.

Sterilization of pipettes

  1. If the pipette cannot be sterilized as a whole, first use sterilization bags, tin foil or kraft paper, and other materials to package the parts to be sterilized, 121 ℃, 1 bar atmospheric pressure, 20 minutes. After sterilization, air it completely at room temperature, oil the piston, and then assemble it.

  1. If it is a whole sterilized pipette (such as the Aberdeen Research plus pipette), the whole pipette can be placed at 121 ℃ and 1 bar atmospheric pressure for 20 minutes of high temperature and high-pressure disinfection.

  1. If some pipettes cannot be sterilized under high temperature and pressure, but need to be used for some special operations. If you are worried that the pipettes will be contaminated and affect the experimental results. Then use 75% ethanol to clean the head of the pipettes.
